How Great is Your God?

How Great is Your God?
The vast majority of human beings have some sort of a mental image of God. It could be the childish image of a kindly grandfather figure or a more adult image of a king sitting on a heavenly throne.

If any curious person takes the time to explore the scientific rudiments of biological and physical creation, it quickly becomes apparent that whatever image one may have, has to be enlarged and multiplied by some astronomical figure. The numbers involved in the study of any part of creation are mind-boggling.

For example, our Milky Way Galaxy contains over 200 billion stars. The Hubble Telescope, now in space orbit, shows over a billion galaxies. It takes 300 years for light to travel across our one galaxy at a speed of 186,000 miles per second (galaxies are rather large). Counting atoms, molecules, cells, and body parts, we are made up of trillions of parts. As the psalmist says, “We are fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Our human brain has about a trillion nerve cells at birth. One drop of human blood contains millions of living cells. Our brains appear to be communicating and instructing every one of these cells, which seem to function with a great amount of intelligence.

Our livers are fantastic chemical factories that produce an untold number of chemical compounds. Brilliant chemists with advanced university degrees are still unable to duplicate some of these complex chemicals. And as a bi-product, these chemical reactions produce heat that keeps our body temperature warm and constant for life. The list of the marvels of creation is endless, and it just goes on and on.

Our intellect tells us that all this incredible creation could not have happened accidentally. Some immense intelligence would have had to do the creating. To make these facts even more awesome, when matter is broken down into atoms, and when these atoms are broken down, they are found to contain nothing but energy. So in a sense, everything is made up of nothing, or just power, enormous power! Could it be possible that all created things are made up solely of energy (or God's power?)

In one of his books, Stephen Hawking, one of the greatest physicists of our time, makes a statement regarding this energy that is seemingly so unbelievable that I will copy it verbatim:

“The weight of matter converted to energy in the bomb that destroyed the city of Hiroshima was less than one ounce.”

How great is your God?

(Ps 76:4) Terrible and awesome are you, stronger than the ancient mountains.
